2025 LEGISLATIVE IMPACT

Throughout the 2025 Maryland General Assembly session, Tew Advocate supported clients, coalitions, and community partners in advancing legislation, budget priorities, and policy initiatives that strengthened communities across Maryland. Our work focused on economic opportunity, public safety, civil rights, healthcare, housing, workforce development, and community investment.


ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

• Supported efforts advancing more than $200 million in infrastructure funding associated with the FBI Relocation project in Greenbelt.

• Secured a $25,000 grant from the City of Bowie to create an online business directory focused on veteran-owned businesses and to launch a "Shop Local Bowie" marketing campaign.

• Supported $750,000 in funding for Maryland's Community Action Agencies and their statewide umbrella organization.

• Secured $100,000 in funding to support the ongoing operations of a local nonprofit organization.

• Secured $25,000 in funding to support the ongoing operations of a local nonprofit organization.


PUBLIC SAFETY & JUSTICE

• Supported passage of the Second Chance Act, a long-term advocacy priority focused on expanding opportunities for returning citizens.

• Supported passage of the Automated Enforcement Review and Certification legislation after four years of advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

• Advanced Comprehensive Rehabilitative Prerelease Services legislation focused on improving reentry outcomes for incarcerated women.

• Supported legislation strengthening protections for victims of sexual assault and stalking.

• Supported legislation extending protections and relief available to survivors of domestic violence.


CIVIL RIGHTS & DEMOCRY

• Supported passage of the Maryland Values Act, strengthening protections for Maryland's undocumented communities.

• Supported passage of the Maryland Voting Rights Act, a landmark law designed to protect against discriminatory local election systems and voting practices.

• Advanced automatic voter registration restoration for individuals released from state correctional facilities.

• Supported expanded access to early voting through improved transportation accessibility.

• Supported reforms improving transparency and plain-language requirements for petitions and ballot questions.


HOUSING & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

• Supported passage of the Transit & Housing Opportunity Act, helping create opportunities for more than 7,000 new housing units near transit corridors.

• Supported passage of the Housing Certainty Act, creating more predictability in the development approval process.

• Supported legislation expanding Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to increase affordable housing options across Maryland.

• Supported HB 1266 in Prince George's County, advancing long-overdue conversations regarding municipal participation in land use decisions that impact local residents.


HEALTH, FAMILIES & COMMUNITY WELL-BEING

• Supported the Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for All Marylanders Now Act.

• Supported funding expansions for abortion access and reproductive healthcare services.

• Advanced legislation protecting access to childcare assistance for vulnerable families, including those experiencing homelessness.

• Supported creation of a workgroup to develop a sustainable statewide model for universal newborn nurse home visiting programs.


DISABILITY RIGHTS & ACCESSIBILITY

• Supported creation of the Office of Disability Employment Advancement and Policy.

• Supported legislation simplifying transit fare discount renewals for individuals with permanent disabilities.

• Advanced legislation improving accessibility and emergency planning measures for students with disabilities in Maryland public schools.


WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

• Supported passage of the RAISE Act to expand registered apprenticeship opportunities and workforce development initiatives.

• Supported legislation authorizing Worker Cooperative Associations and encouraging innovative business ownership models.

• Supported funding and expansion of inclusive higher education opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
